Robert Montgomery McDowall
Robert (Bob) Montgomery McDowall (15 September 1939 – 20 February 2011) was one of New Zealand's most prominent freshwater ichthyologists.
==Biography==
McDowall was born on 15 September 1939, the son of dairy scientist Frederick Henry McDowall and entomologist Grace Edith Wall. After completing a BSc and an MSc at Victoria University of Wellington he undertook PhD study at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, where he investigated the systematics and phylogeny of the New Zealand whitebait. He returned to New Zealand to study fisheries at the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. He wrote many books and rose to direct a division.〔
He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 1984, as his father had been in 1962.
During his scientific career, McDowall wrote 14 books, as well as 230 papers in 66 different journals. His last book, ''Ikawai: freshwater fishes in Māori culture and economy'', was published in October 2011 following his death on 20 February 2011. He was posthumously awarded the Le Cren Medal by the Fisheries Society of the British Isles in 2011.
